Australian natives for wind exposed gardens and windbreaks
Wind is one of the most underestimated forces in the garden. It desiccates foliage, causes more physical damage to young plants than any pest, carries salt in coastal positions and creates a hostile microclimate.
Exposed positions reward patience and the right plant selection — once a windbreak is established, the range of what will grow in its shelter expands dramatically.
This article covers two overlapping plant groups. The workhorse table below lists plants chosen for their ability to survive full exposure while they grow large enough to shelter everything behind them. The featured plants that follow are wind-tolerant garden species: attractive, ecologically valuable and genuinely suited to exposed positions once some initial shelter exists.

Eight windbreak workhorses
These are the plants to establish first in the most exposed positions in the garden. All eight are fast enough to provide meaningful shelter within a few seasons, tough enough to handle the full force of the wind and structurally dense enough to reduce wind speed.

How to structure a windbreak
A fence or wall deflects wind upward and creates turbulence on the leeward side that can be more damaging than the original exposure. A permeable planting of the species in the table above reduces wind speed progressively and creates calm conditions for a distance of roughly five to ten times the height of the windbreak behind it. Plant in staggered rows rather than a single line, with taller species at the back.
10 wind-tolerant garden plants
The plants below are suited to exposed positions either independently or once a basic windbreak has been established. They are chosen for garden interest — flower, form, foliage or ecological value — as well as toughness.
Eremophila with silver foliage — many of the most wind-tolerant plants in the Australian flora share a common adaptation: highly reflective, fine or resinous foliage that reduces water loss in exposed, desiccating conditions.

Correa reflexa is the most widely distributed correa in Australia, occurring naturally on coastal headlands, exposed rocky outcrops and inland hillsides. Its small leaves and pendant tubular flowers are all adaptations to exposed positions where wind, drought and temperature extremes test most other plants. The compact, dense habit means it deflects rather than catches wind and does not suffer mechanical damage in exposure. Prune lightly after the main flowering flush to maintain density.

It develops specialised cluster roots that extract phosphorus from depleted soils with exceptional efficiency. The leathery, silver-backed leaves are reflective to reduce heat load and the tough texture resists wind desiccation.

Ozothamnus diosmifolius occurs naturally along the east coast of Australia in heath and open scrub communities. The fine, aromatic leaves and dense branches are characteristic of plants adapted to wind exposure. Reduced leaf surface area limits desiccation and the structure distributes wind loading across the whole plant. In late winter and spring the plant is covered in small white to pale pink flowers that dry to a papery texture and hold their form for weeks.

Grevillea victoriae is a plant of the Australian alps, subalpine heathlands and exposed tablelands. Its stems are flexible rather than rigid, which means they bend under wind load rather than resisting it and snapping. The leaves are moderately sized and leathery, reducing the sail effect and limiting wind desiccation. The hanging flower clusters are an incidental wind adaptation: pendant structures shed wind load, which is why so many wind-exposed plants have drooping flower spikes.

Prostanthera rotundifolia occurs naturally in ridge tops, rocky hillsides, creek banks in exposed valleys and disturbed ground at altitude. The small, round leaves are intensely aromatic and in an exposed windy position the scent is carried. The plant produces purple flowers that cover it almost entirely, making it one of the most spectacular spring-flowering shrubs. It handles frost, wind, thin rocky soils and dry conditions reliably. Prune by about a third immediately after flowering to prevent it becoming straggly.
River bottlebrush (Callistemon sieberi)

Callistemon sieberi grows naturally along creek lines and river banks in exposed temperate valleys — positions that combine wind exposure, periodic flooding, frost and high UV. It is significantly more frost and cold-wind tolerant than the more commonly planted Callistemon viminalis, and its cream to pale yellow flowers are unusual in the genus. In a garden, it is long-lived and structurally dense enough to contribute to a windbreak's lower layer.

Leptospermum polygalifolium is a more elegant and less commonly featured alternative to the coast tea-tree in the workhorse table — where L. laevigatum is a tough, dense windbreak plant, polygalifolium is a graceful small tree or large shrub with fine foliage and a lighter, more open form. The small white to cream flowers provide a nectar resource for native bees and small insects. Its flexibility makes it genuinely useful as a secondary windbreak layer or feature plant in a mixed border.

Melaleuca armillaris sits at the boundary between the windbreak workhorse table and the garden proper. Its fine, needle-like foliage and dense branching structure are purpose-built for wind exposure. The mass of small leaves absorbs and deflects wind energy, reducing wind velocity through the canopy. It handles salt spray, periodic waterlogging and compacted coastal soils without complaint. It requires no fertiliser and benefits from a light trim after flowering to maintain density.

Olearia axillaris grows naturally on coastal dunes, limestone headlands and exposed scrublands across southern WA and SA. The dense layer of fine hairs on the leaf surface reduces water loss and deflects salt particles before they can damage the tissue. Small white daisy flowers appear through winter and spring, attracting native bees and small insects at a time when coastal gardens offer little else. In cultivation it requires no care, just excellent drainage and full sun.

Leucophyta brownii forms a dense, perfectly rounded silver-white dome of interlocking stems that is as architecturally striking. It grows naturally on coastal cliffs, dune crests and exposed limestone headlands across southern Australia. The silvery appearance comes from a dense coating of fine hairs on every stem, which reflects light and reduces water loss simultaneously. It requires full sun, excellent drainage and essentially no care. The dome form becomes more pronounced with age.
Establishing a wind-exposed garden: the sequence
The single most common mistake in establishing a garden in an exposed position is planting everything at once. The windbreak species and the garden plants go in together, the windbreak is too small to provide shelter. The garden plants either fail or establish into permanently stunted, wind-sculpted shapes that never recover their intended form.
A well-established windbreak creates the conditions for everything behind it to thrive — the sheltered zone that builds up over two to three seasons is one of the most transformative changes a garden in an exposed position can make.
The correct sequence is straightforward. Establish the windbreak species first and give them a full growing season before planting into the sheltered zone behind them. Use tree guards during establishment as the improvement in survival rate and establishment speed in exposed positions is significant. Mulch heavily to reduce soil moisture loss at the root zone.
Snow-in-summer (Melaleuca linariifolia) — the fine, dense canopy absorbs and deflects wind energy progressively; a useful addition to a sheltered zone once the windbreak is established.
Once the windbreak is providing meaningful shelter (typically at 1.5–2m height for the taller species), add your featured plants into the sheltered zone. Start closest to the windbreak where shelter is greatest and work outward.
