Buying gifts for Australian gardeners
Gardeners tend to already own the obvious things, so buying a great gift without doubling up can sometimes be tricky. What lands is often something they would not have bought themselves, made well enough to still be in the shed in years to come and is a genuinely useful addition to their kit.
Start with how they garden
A courtyard gardener wants different things to someone managing an acre. Small spaces reward precision, so hand tools, ollas for holidays away and seed that suits a container. Larger gardens reward leverage and reach. If you are not sure which you are buying for, the safest ground is something used every single time they garden, which usually means gloves, a knife or a good pair of secateurs.
Buy well
The difference between a cheap trowel and a forged one shows up in the first hour of hard ground. Forged steel holds an edge, hardwood handles can be re-oiled, and parts that are riveted rather than glued can be repaired. A well made tool is a better gift at fifty dollars than three replaceable ones at twenty.
