Japanese pick mattock for tough soil work

Made in Japan by Asano Mokkousho, this compact pick mattock is a hardworking dual-purpose tool for gardeners who need to get into difficult ground. Forged steel, a birch wood handle and a weight of just 505g make it precise enough for detailed cultivation work and tough enough for the jobs that demand a lot.

Dual-purpose forged steel head

The forged steel head combines a pick on one side and a mattock on the other ideal for breaking compacted soil, loosening ground and cultivating beds without needing to switch tools. It is equally well suited to bush regeneration and restoration work where soil conditions are unpredictable.

Australian soils can be unforgiving — heavy clay, rocky ground and the dry compacted surfaces common in native gardens all benefit from the kind of focused force the pick end delivers before the mattock cultivates. At 36cm the handle gives enough leverage for that work without becoming unwieldy in tighter spaces.

Compact and well balanced

The birch wood handle is sized for single-handed use with good control, making it practical in raised beds, tight borders and the kind of close cultivation work where a full-size mattock would be too large.
