Australian bushfire seed collection — smoke-germinated native flowers and bush tucker
The Native Seed Box Bushfire Collection is an introduction to one of the most fascinating aspects of Australian ecology — the role of fire in native seed germination. Bushfire smoke has shaped the Australian landscape for thousands of years, triggering germination in species that have evolved to wait for it. This collection gives you the tools, the seeds and the knowledge to experience that process at home, growing native wildflowers and edible bush tucker species from smoke-treated seed. Made in Australia in Native Seed Box's Wonthaggi workshop.
Why Australian seeds need smoke
Many iconic Australian plant species have evolved to germinate only after exposure to bushfire smoke — a survival mechanism that ensures seeds wait for the post-fire conditions most favourable to establishment. The active compound in smoke that triggers this response is karrikinolide, and replicating it in a home garden setting is entirely possible with the right pre-treatment. This collection includes smoke-infused germination granules that deliver that trigger without the fire, giving smoke-dependent seeds the signal they need to break dormancy and germinate.
What's in the collection
The collection contains a carefully selected mix of Australian smoke-dependent species spanning both ornamental wildflowers and edible bush tucker plants — giving you colour, interest and harvest from the same growing project.
Flower species include:
- Native Iris
- Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos sp.)
- Blue Strap Flowers
Edible bush tucker species include:
- Native Spinach
- Quandong (Santalum acuminatum)
- Native Iris (edible)

The pack contains a selection of smoke-dependent Australian native seeds, a packet of smoke-infused germination granules for pre-treatment and a full instruction leaflet covering the smoke treatment process and growing requirements. All species work well in open garden beds and patio pots, making this collection suited to any garden size.
