A terracotta bottle olla set for deep, water-wise irrigation — one medium and one large
This set of two bottle ollas — one medium and one large — brings one of the oldest irrigation methods in the world to multiple garden beds or pots at once. Buried in the soil and filled with water, the porous terracotta walls slowly release moisture directly into the root zone where plants need it most. Less evaporation, less surface watering and stronger, deeper root systems as a result. A quiet, effective solution for the Australian garden.
How ollas work
Bury each olla up to its narrow neck, fill with water and replace the lid. The unglazed terracotta clay releases water slowly and steadily into the surrounding soil through capillary action, drawn by the roots of nearby plants. The soil directly around each olla stays consistently moist while the surface remains dry. This eliminates the cycle of wet and dry that stresses plants between waterings.
In the Australian native garden, where deep, infrequent watering is the ideal and overhead watering can cause problems with disease-susceptible species, ollas offer a particularly well-suited alternative. Plants establish faster and develop more extensive root systems when moisture is delivered at depth rather than at the surface.
Low-maintenance watering for multiple plants
Once buried and filled, each olla works without intervention. The medium olla suits smaller pots, herb gardens and single plants while the large olla handles bigger root zones, thirstier specimens and more substantial beds. Together they cover a range of watering needs across the same garden without timers, tubing or daily checking. Every piece is made from natural red terracotta clay fired at high temperatures for strength and durability and may show the natural variations in tone and texture that come with terracotta.
