Soil preparation without enrichment
Most Australian native wildflowers evolved in lean, low-phosphorus soils. Adding compost before sowing encourages fast, soft growth that is less drought-tolerant and more susceptible to fungal disease. Sun and light requirements

Spacing and spread

Temperate and cool temperate — VIC, TAS, ACT, southern NSW
The most reliable sowing zone for the widest range of native wildflowers. Cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures through spring and autumn create ideal germination conditions for most species.

Mediterranean WA — Perth and surrounds, south-west WA
Dry, hot summers and mild, wet winters create a sowing window that is almost the inverse of eastern Australia. Autumn is the primary sowing season here.

They do not experience the transplant stress that even a healthy advanced plant goes through when its roots are disturbed. Direct-sown native wildflowers often outperform transplants within two growing seasons.

Sowing a mix of native wildflower species supports a wider range of pollinators than a monoculture planting of advanced plants. Varied heights, flower forms and flowering times create layered habitat and staggered food sources — particularly valuable for native bees, which have specific foraging preferences.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
There are three main reasons that seeds fail, assuming your timing is right:
- Sowing too deep
- Inconsistent moisture
- Wrong or too much fertiliser

Sowing too deep
This is the most common cause of germination failure with native wildflowers. Most species need light to germinate and are inhibited by more than a few millimetres of soil cover. If seeds are not appearing after three weeks in the right conditions, depth is usually the reason. Scatter seeds on the surface, press gently with a flat board or the back of a trowel, and cover with the finest possible scatter of soil — no more than 2–3mm for most species.
Inconsistent moisture in the first two weeks
Seeds that begin germinating and then dry out do not recover. The radicle (the first root to emerge) is fragile and irreversible damage occurs within hours of desiccation. Two weeks of consistent morning and evening watering is the minimum commitment when sowing native seeds directly.

Fertilising at sowing
Standard fertilisers contain phosphorus levels that are toxic to many Australian native species and will cause root burn in emerging seedlings. Do not add any fertiliser at sowing. A low-phosphorus native fertiliser can be applied sparingly once plants are established and actively growing.
What comes next
Once your seedlings are established and the first flowers appear, they largely look after themselves. Spent flower heads can be left in place to set seed and extend the planting naturally.
Willow herb (Epilobium spp.) have beautiful seed heads — many native wildflowers self-seed freely if spent heads are left in place, extending the planting without any further effort.
However, removing spent heads keeps the display tidy and can encourage a second flush of flowers in annuals, but it is not necessary for the health of the planting. If plants become sparse after flowering, lightly scratch the surface of the soil around them and allow fallen seeds to make contact with the ground. A light scatter of water every few days will trigger germination without the intensive schedule needed at establishment.
